The best time to visit the Terracotta Army

Mild shoulder seasons, early hours, and dodging the holiday crush.

The Terracotta Army through the year

SeasonWhat to expect
Spring (Apr–May)Mild and comfortable — a fine time to visit
Summer (Jun–Aug)Hot, humid and very busy
Autumn (Sep–Oct)Cool and pleasant — an excellent window
Winter (Nov–Mar)Cold but quieter inside the covered pits

Spring and autumn are ideal

As with much of central China, spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) bring the most comfortable weather for visiting the Terracotta Army, with mild temperatures that make the journey from Xi'an and time on site pleasant. These shoulder seasons avoid the worst of the summer heat and the winter cold, making them the sweet spot for most travellers planning a visit.

Summer: hot and crowded

Summer is hot and humid in Xi'an and coincides with peak domestic travel, so the site is at its busiest. The pits are covered, offering some shelter, but the crowds can be intense, especially in Pit 1. A summer visit is very doable — just plan for heat, hydration and an early start to get ahead of the largest tour groups.

Winter's quieter halls

Winter is cold outside, but because the main displays are within covered halls, a winter visit can be surprisingly comfortable inside and noticeably quieter than peak season. If you don't mind bundling up for the journey and the outdoor stretches, the reduced crowds can make for a more contemplative experience among the warriors.

Avoid the holiday peaks

The most important timing rule is to avoid Chinese public-holiday periods if you possibly can. The Terracotta Army is a top domestic destination, and during major holidays it becomes extremely crowded, which can undermine the experience. If your dates overlap a holiday, brace for company and get there as early as possible to see Pit 1 before the crush.

Early in the day, always

Whatever the season, arriving near opening is the reliable way to see the Terracotta Army at its best. Pit 1's scale is most impressive when it isn't packed, and an early start gives you unhurried time across all three pits and the bronze chariots. Combined with a well-chosen season, an early arrival is the simplest formula for a great visit.
